As global interest continues to grow, many believe Korean literature could be the next Hallyu hit.
Choi Min-jung has the details.
Literary works written by Korean authors have been nominated for prestigious overseas literary awards.
With growing appreciation for Korean literature,… Hallyu, the so-called Korean wave of popular culture,… continues to attract fans across the globe.
"At Dusk" by Hwang Sok-yong has been nominated for the 2020 National Translation Award. This award, administered by the American Literary Translators Association, is the only award in the entire United States given to literary writers in poem and in prose.
Another Korean contender for this year's National Translation Award,… Kim Yideum's "Hysteria",… has also made it on to the shortlist for the 2020 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, alongside two other Asian candidates.
Prior to these literary masterpieces, Cho Nam-joo's English version of "Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982", ... was nominated for the National Book Award in the category of translated literature, though she did not make the finals. The bestselling novel,.. which was also made into a movie,.. is highly regarded overseas with translations in twelve different languages.
"In some cases, Korean literature fans study at translation institutes to translate the language. Moreover, as K-pop stars mention Korean literature, it grows further as a part of Hallyu, the Korean wave."
With Korean wave fandom playing a significant role, an even brighter future for Korean literature is yet to come.
