A three-time MLA and a diehard party loyalist J Anbazhagan died of Covid-19 in Chennai on June 10. He is the first legislator in the country to fall victim to the virus.J Anbazhagan was the former DMK Chennai West district secretary. Following his death, DMK head Stalin has announced that N Chitrarasu will helm the post. Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin has announced that Raja Anbazhagan will be appointed as the Chennai West District Youth wing Organizer in his party office meeting.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections to be held in Tamil Nadu on May 2021 for the 234 seats of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Tamil Nadu in India]. This will be the first full-state legislative election without J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi, as they both died in 2016 and 2018 respectively and new leaders for arch rivals DMK and AIADMK. Actor Rajinikanth made an announcement to contest in all 234 seats by floating his own party
