After the Congress mooted the idea that the opposition jointly contests the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman's post, DMK leader Tiruchi Siva's name has been almost finalized as the opposition candidate, sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said that the Congress leadership had spoken to DMK chief MK Stalin and that he had consented to the candidature of Siva, a senior party leader, and fourth-time Rajya Sabha member. He has also been a Lok Sabha member in the past.
Senior leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Duraimurugan and TR Baalu have been elected unopposed as the general secretary and treasurer of the party. While A Raja and Ponmudy have been elevated as the deputy general secretaries of the party, Kanimozhi’s position from the party remains unchanged.
Due to COVID-19, the DMK leadership decided to hold the general council meeting virtually and it was attended by the party members from all across Tamil Nadu. According to party insiders, DMK chief MK Stalin had a tough time in convincing seniors in the party who were mulling for key posts. “MK Stalin did not want an election for the post of general secretary and treasurer.”
A Raja and Ponmudy who were also eyeing for key posts in the party were convinced by the leadership to accept the role of deputy general secretaries. Sources say Kanimozhi’s name was also considered for the post of deputy general secretary, however, her position in the party remains unchanged.
