Western ghats are one of the most suitable habitats for Asian elephants. Out of the almost 30,000 elephants in India, maximum (~12,000) are in South India. The 88 elephant corridors in India are heavily fragmented. With only a quarter of corridors under complete forest cover and over 70% of their area less than 1 km wide, man-animal conflicts are very common in India as an elephant herd needs to travel 10–20km every day.

Every year hundreds of elephants move from the plateaus to plains in search of food. The path that connects two major habitats is called the elephant corridor. The Moyar elephant corridor was originally inhabited by locals who depended on agriculture for their livelihood. But, soon people from other parts of the country moved in and began constructing farmhouses that were later converted to resorts. Commercial tourism picked up and more resorts sprang up in the area.”
The Nilgiris biosphere spans around 5,000 sq km and the Moyar elephant corridor where the resorts are located in a deep valley. “There are many villages in the region. According to a study done in 2008, there were only 40 resorts in Nilgiris. But, today, not only has the footfall increased but the number of resorts has grown exponentially. The local people didn’t want massive development in the area but unfortunately, it became a hub of resorts and real estate business, Ashramam.

Following the deaths of many elephants within the Coimbatore Forest Division, including one that was gunned down a female wild elephant in their agricultural field near Mettupalayam in Tamil Nadu. The 35-year-old pachyderm had been shot in the left ear with a country-made rifle, possibly after it entered the field. The lead pellet, which pierced her brain, was later removed during the autopsy. The incident took place near Coimbatore’s forest division, where 14 wild elephants have already died this year.
