A day after the Madras High Court asked people to adhere to the orders of the government in connection with Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations, the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday reiterated that in view of the Coronavirus pandemic, public installation of Lord Ganesha idols, taking out processions and immersing it in water bodies as part of the festival will be prohibited this year in the state.
Despite pressure from the BJP and other Hindu groups, the government stood firm on its decision and said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the guidelines issued by Ministry of Home Affairs on July 29 banning religious functions across the country. Further, the government also requested people to comply with the order and celebrate the festival at their homes.
Reacting to this, Tamil Nadu BJP President L Murugan said that his party will follow Hindu Munnani, a pro-Hindu group, in defying the government ban by installing more than 1.5 lakh Lord Ganesha idols across the state.He also questioned the logic of the AIADMK government and asked as to why there is a ban on installation of idols when the government has allowed TASMAC liquor shops to be opened across the state.
Murugan, who had called on Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday to urge the government to change its stand on the issue, also cited the example of states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra where the state governments have allowed Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.
