He served a major role in the formation of the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) to provide free vaccination to people in poor countries.GAVI has vaccinated 44 crore people in the last 20 years and has avoided 60,00,000 deaths.
In February, Bill Gates predicted that corona would pose a major threat to the world, and immediately funded Rs 750 crore for corona vaccine research.
The Serum Institute of India, the Bill Gates Foundation, and the ‘GAVI’ organization have signed an agreement. The Serum Institute is developing the ‘Covishield’ vaccine, which has been jointly developed by Britain’s AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The ‘NVX-CoV2373’ vaccine, developed by the US company Novavax, is also developed here. Both of these may be less expensive.
When these are successful in testing, billions of doses of vaccine have to be produced. Only then will these be available worldwide at the same time. The Gates Foundation is providing Rs 1,125 crore to set up the Serum Institute to facilitate such large-scale vaccine production. In return, the Serum Institute will provide 10 crore doses of vaccines for Rs 224 per vaccine. It will be provided by the Bill Gates Foundation through the ‘GAVI’ organization to people in 92 poor and middle-income countries, including India.
