A 28-year-old police constable was killed on the spot after a double murder accused hurled a country-made bomb at a special police team attempting to arrest the man at Manakarai village near Murapanadu on Tuesday.
The constable was identified as Subramanian, hailing from Pandaravilai village near Srivaikuntam. He worked as the Alwarthirunagar police station and was part of a five-member special police team that went to Manakarai to arrest the accused Durai Muthu (30). According to police, when the team was in pursuit of Muthu and his aides, the accused hurled country-made bombs at the police personnel and ran into the forest. The police also retaliated but Subramanian was killed on the spot as a bomb fell on him.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday sought a nod from the Union Minister for Jal Shakthi, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, for the Nadandhai Vaazhi Cauvery Project that aims at rehabilitation and rejuvenation of Cauvery river on the lines of the Namami Gange Project (rejuvenation of the Ganges). Holding discussions with the Union Minister on various issues relating to water resources through video conference, Palaniswami said, “The Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited is preparing a Detailed Project Report. Cauvery is the lifeline of TN, not only for agriculture but also drinking water.
A day after Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking postponement of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) scheduled to be held in September, a 19-year-old Coimbatore girl died by suicide on Tuesday allegedly out of fear of writing the paper.
According to the police, the deceased R Subhshri, daughter of an ITI staff from Venkatasamy Road (East) in RS Puram, was preparing for the medical entrance test for the past two years.
Though she appeared for the exam in 2019, she couldn't get the minimum cut-off mark to qualify for the medical admission.Aiming to crack the exam this year, she was preparing hard and got herself enrolled in a private coaching center in the same locality.
