In this episode of Elangovan Explains he talks about the Kerala gold smuggling news updates,The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a First Information Report against four accused in the case of gold smuggling via diplomatic channels.In the FIR, Sarith Kumar, who is in the custody of the customs, is first accused; Swapna Suresh is second; elusive UAE-based smuggling kingpin Fazil Pareed is third; and Suresh’s friend Sandeep Nair is the fourth accused.
The central government on Friday informed the Kerala High Court that Swapna Suresh, who is at large after the seizure of 30 kg of gold smuggled through the diplomatic channel, had conspired and actively participated to facilitate gold smuggling.
She was a pivotal member of the gang engaged in smuggling of large quantities of gold to India by defrauding government agencies and the Customs department using the cover of diplomatic protection, it said.The Centre also revealed that the involvement of higher officials cannot also be ruled out at this stage, which can only be unearthed after interrogating Swapna.
Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has removed his principal secretary M Shivashankar who is allegedly close to the mastermind behind the smuggling case that triggered a political controversy in the state. Shivashankar will be replaced by Mir Muhammad, a young IAS officer, said local media reports.
The Opposition in Kerala has been calling for a thorough probe in the matter. On Friday, youth workers of the Congress, BJP and IUML took out protest marches in all district headquarters, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the gold smuggling case.Vijayan had on Wednesday written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an “effective and coordinated” investigation into the incident by central agencies.
