It is told in the scriptures that 2 years Kanya Kumari, three years of Trimurti, four years of Kalyani, five years of Rohini, six years of girls, seven years of Chandika, eight years of Shambhari, nine years of Durga and ten years of girls It is called Subhadra. Worshiping girls above the age of 11 years is considered taboo. It is said that Goddess is not pleased with home, chanting, and charity as much as the girl is worshiped. Virgo worship is considered best for sorrow, poverty and enemy destruction. It is not necessary that only nine girls should be worshiped; worshiping a girl is also as fruitful as nine girls.

महाअष्टमी और महानवमी के दिन देवी की पूजा करने के साथ ही कन्याओं की पूजा की जाती है और इसके बाद उन्हें भोजन करवाया जाता है और उपहार दिया जाता है। आमतौर पर नौ कन्याओं को भोजन करवाया जाता है। कन्याओं को गिफ्ट में कुमकुम, बिंदी और चुड़ियां दी जाती हैं।एक सवाल यह उठता है कि कन्या किसे माना जाता। शास्त्रों में बताया गया है कि 2 वर्ष कन्या कुमारी, तीन वर्ष की त्रिमूर्ति, चार वर्ष की कल्याणी, पांच वर्ष की रोहिणी, छः वर्ष की बालिका, सात वर्ष की चण्डिका, आठ वर्ष की शाम्भरी, नौ वर्ष की दुर्गा और दस वर्ष की कन्या सुभद्रा कहलती हैं। 11 वर्ष से ऊपर की अवस्था की कन्याओं का पूजन वर्जित माना जाता है। कहा जाता है कि होम, जप, और दान से देवी इतनी प्रसन्न नहीं होती जितनी कि कन्या पूजन से होती हैं। दुःख, दरिद्रता और शत्रु नाश के लिए कन्या पूजन सर्वोत्तम माना गया है। यह कोई आवश्यक नही कि नौ कन्याओं का ही पूजन किया जाए एक कन्या का पूजन भी उतना फलदायक होता है जितनी नौ कन्याओं का।
