Periyar Erode Venkata Ramasamy also known as Ramaswami, EVR, Thanthai Periyar, or Periyar, was a Dravidian social activist and former politician from India, who founded the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam. He propagated the principles of rationalism, self-respect, women’s rights and eradication of caste. He opposed the exploitation and marginalisation of the non-Brahmin indigenous Dravidian peoples of South India by Brahmins ,the so-called upper castes. While continuing the Self-Respect Movement, he advocated for an independent Dravida Nadu (Dravidistan) because he was of the view that the Brahmins would replace English in oppressing the native people which incidentally found to be true and it's effects can be seen even today. He didn't have any disdain for Tamil language or Tamils as some intellectuals want to degrade his thoughts.Infact his era marked the returning of secular literature in Tamil nearly after centuries. Between 6th and 19th century Tamil was used to propagate superstitious Bakti cult among the masses.Before 6th century the literature was totally different as it was more inclusive,no varna,no superstitious beliefs,no Brahmins. Hence Periyar used Tamil to the fullest extent in his mission and also contributed to the modern script of Classic Tamil language.Periyar's legacy can be understood by simply watching how his name evoke panic among the Castemongers and Hindutva fanatics
