Europe overtakes U.S. with record-high COVID-19 numbers

Now battling a second wave of COVID-19, Europe has overtaken the U.S. in a key metric that tracks the spread of the virus.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the daily average of new cases has increased by 78-thousand across the 27 European Union nations and the United Kingdom over the last seven days.
That's almost 30-thousand more than how many the U.S. saw on average during the same period.
In response, France has declared a state of emergency.
Starting Saturday, nine major cities including Paris will be under curfew between the hours of 9PM to 6AM for a period of at least four weeks.
"We are a nation of citizens who stand side by side. We cannot get through this if everyone doesn't play their part, doesn't do their bit. So I am saying very clearly: I need every one of you, we need every one of us."
Italy reported its largest daily tally on Wednesday, with more than seven-thousand-three-hundred.
Italians are being urged to limit home visits to six people while school and amateur sports activities are subject to restrictions.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic now has Europe's worst new infection rate per capita...forcing hospitals to cancel non-urgent medical procedures to free up beds.
"We can physically add more beds, I expect we would get equipment as well, but there is nowhere to find more staff. We can expect personnel numbers to drop because of school closures, also because of the rise in infections among our colleagues."
Schools have shifted to remote learning, restaurants are limited to delivery or takeout while bars and night clubs are closed.
In a similar fashion, the Netherlands has just entered a four-week partial lockdown.
Schools and public transport will continue to operate but everyone over the age of 13 must wear face masks while inside or onboard.
This resurgence marks the first time Europe has outpaced the U.S. in new COVID cases per million since spring.
