Why are Arab countries uniting to support the Syrian regime against Turkey-
  • 4 years ago
Following the normalization of the UAE with Israel, the Gulf state - in collusion with Egypt - openly supported the oppressive Syrian regime, against Turkey in northern Syria.

On September 9, the countries of the Arab League, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Jordan gathered under the leadership of Egypt to create "solidarity" between them, facing Turkey in the Middle East, particularly in northern Syria. Damascus was suspended from the alliance in 2011 following the Syrian regime's crackdown on countrywide protests. He also agreed to pressure regime leader Bashar al Assad with sanctions.

Over a nine-year period, the league has softened up against the Syrian regime as it recently discussed activating its membership in the alliance with Assad who remains in power.

The meeting comes after the Syrian regime's first public contact with the UAE in eight years in March, as well as the last visit of its diplomatic and military delegation to Egypt's Foreign Ministry on September 17.

A closer partnership between the Syrian-UAE-Egyptian trio

For regional observers, the UAE-Egypt joint effort to garner support for Damascus comes as no surprise. Although not involved in direct discussions until recently, the UAE has shown signs of changing its policy towards the Syrian regime, especially following Russia's involvement in the war in 2015 to support Bashar al Assad.
