A Tropical Storm system developed Monday morning near Jamaica and could batter the Gulf Coast of the US as a Category 2 hurricane by the end of the week.Tropical Storm Delta formed in the Caribbean Sea and currently swirling about 130 miles south of Negril, Jamaica moving west-northwest near 10mph.Delta is expected to become a hurricane before hitting Cuba on Tuesday and will intensify with 100mph winds before potentially battering the US Gulf Coast as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane Thursday or Friday. However, there is still 'large uncertainty' in the track of Delta, according to the National Hurricane Center. If it does hit Louisiana, it could bring greater devastation to the state still reeling from Hurricane Laura that hit August 27. If it hits the US, Delta will bring 'risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle', the NHC said..Both systems will be within 500 miles of each other late Monday into Tuesday.Tropical Storm Gamma is slated to make landfall along the northern coast of Yucatan on Saturday, at the moment traveling with 45mph sustained winds, after hitting eastern side of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula near Tulum Saturday, the NHC said Monday. Gamma is forecast to weaken this week and 'be absorbed by the large circulation of Delta, the expected central Gulf of Mexico hurricane.' The Fujiwhara effect is when two tropical systems moving in such close proximity of each other that they begin to swirl around their common center. This can force either tropical system to temporarily change course,' AccuWeather said Sunday.By Tuesday Delta could be a hurricane off the northwest coast of Cuba and a hurricane warning has been issued for Western Cuba. The National Hurricane Center warned Monday of heavy rainfall in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and western Cuba over the next few days that could lead to significant flash flooding and mudslides due to Delta.Four to eight inches of rain are expected on those islands as Delta passes by with wind gusts of of 60-70 mph in Cuba. Delta is the 25th named storm of the 2020 hurricane season. If there are two more storm systems, 2020 will tie for the record of the busiest hurricane season in history.2020 has already tied 1916 for nine land-falling tropical systems in the US. 2020 is a La Niña year and forecasters expect late-season storm activity to increase in October and possibly carry into November before the hurricane season officially ends November 30. .
