A village that celebrates its girls and trees
  • 4 years ago
In parts of rural India, there still exist social taboos around the birth of a daughter who is seen as a burden to the family. But the village of Piplantri in Rajasthan, a state known for its child marriages ad even female foeticide and infanticide, stands out as an exception. Every time a girl is born in this village, the residents get together to plant 111 trees in the girl’s name. They have so far grown 350,000 trees in the village, making the future of the village greener and brighter. Their motto is – save daughter, water, and trees. Today, the village has become an ideal that has set an example for the national and international community.
