Canada abandons trade talks with China.
Canadian Foreign Minister stated that he did not want to continue negotiations on free trade with China in the midst of a period in the relationship between the two sides.

"We do not see any conditions to continue negotiations at this time," Canadian Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said in an interview with Globe and Mail on September 18. "The China of 2020 is no longer the same as 2016."

The two countries began negotiating a free trade agreement since 2016, which was expected to make Canada the first country in the G7 group to sign a free trade agreement with the world's second-largest economy.

However, this process has stalled for over a year. The decision to quit negotiations marked a major policy reversal of the administration of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has always wanted to pursue an agreement since coming to power in 2015.

"All initiatives and policies that were introduced in 2016 with China need to be reassessed," Champagne said, adding that Ottawa will "look at them through the lens of China in 2020".

Champagne's latest comment also shows Ottawa's increasingly tough tone towards Beijing, in line with the views of the US,
