Supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his birthday yesterday (September 19th) with parties and rallies across the country.

An event in the Chennai district of Tamil Nadu, however, turned disastrous when a huge bunch of gas-filled balloons exploded, burning several people who were standing nearby.

The organizers were just about to release the hydrogen-filled balloons in the colours of Modi's party when sparks from fireworks ignited the bunch causing a loud bang and a ball of flame.

About 12 people suffered burn injuries, according to reports.
