"Industrial Engineers by profession, and by nature, are solvers of puzzles. And as for me, I feel there can be no more satisfying puzzle to solve than the successful balance of a manufacturing process, in the form of a production assembly line. So says the author of this highly informative book focusing on what he refers to as "practical" industrial engineering. But before a solution can be found to a line balance puzzle, the engineer must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the components of the problem. Part One of this book "The Necessity of Documentation" focuses on learning the product, and its variations, and with the all-important Sequence of Events - identifying and documenting all of the work elements needed to build the product. And with the interactions between the engineer on the line associates building that product. Part Two of this book "The Art of Work Measurement" deals not so much with the mechanics of measuring time is with the activities and etiquettes of applying time values to work elements, sometimes in a hostile environment, working with assemblers who really don't want you to be there doing what you're doing, but to whom you owe a "fair, complete, and correct work standard." And finally, Part Three "The Technique of Line Balance" explains the information, and the calculations needed to set up the balance problem. And offers methods and techniques used to find a solution.
