NORMAN — Before Saturday’s season opener against Missouri State, the OU athletics department announced the “Sooners For Humanity” initiative designed to raise awareness on social justice issues.“We want to be part of the solution,” Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a release. “Toward that end, we have worked collectively to develop a plan for ongoing awareness and education.”The program’s purpose “is to provide a framework to address issues that negate and suppress the human experience.”The initiative’s programs include professional networking, educational and mandatory training programs, voter registration and election-day activities and other efforts to promote equality. Sooners athletes designed optional uniform patches and t-shirts emblazoned with “Sooners For Humanity” and “Black Lives Matter.”
