Cherry blossom season is here, let’s take a picturesque stroll beneath the boughs laden with beautiful pink flowers in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park.
Mention Cherry Blossom trees and most people associate them with Japan but Cherry trees are also popular in the UK, Germany, Canada and the United States. Germany even has its own version of the Japanese Hanami festival. Hana in Japanese is flower and mi means watching or viewing.
The Japanese have a centuries old tradition of picnicking under blossoming Cherry trees to enjoy the beauty whilst it lasts for a few weeks each year. It was originally reserved for the elite but was later opened up to everybody. It is still very popular today, with large numbers of people gathering in parks to celebrate Hanami. The brief beauty of the blossoming period also represents the transient nature of life to the Japanese.
Cherry blossom trees are definitely a thing of beauty that brings joy forever and help us accept that 'Life is like a cherry blossom tree, very fragile yet so beautifully lived'.
