World Suicide Prevention Day: Is mental health the silent killer?

Over 1.39 lakh Indians died by suicide in 2019 and 10,281 farmers and farm labourers died by suicide during the same period.

According to the World Health Organization, almost 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. India accounts for 17.8% of these cases. Further, suicide rates can increase in prolonged crises and experts note that the Covid-19 global pandemic will cause distress and leave many people vulnerable to mental health problems and suicidal behavior, it added.

According to a stduy, one in seven Indians suffer from mental illness.
