An international team of researchers has unearthed a 13-million-year-old fossil of a newly discovered ape species in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur District, which is the earliest known ancestor of the modern-day gibbon. The finding, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, fills a major void in the ape fossil record and provides important new evidence about when the ancestors of today's gibbon migrated to Asia from Africa.

वैज्ञानिकों के एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय दल को जम्मू कश्मीर के उधमपुर जिले में वानर की नयी प्रजाति का 1.3 करोड़ वर्ष पुराना जीवाश्म मिला है। ये आधुनिक समय के लंगूर का प्राचीनतम पूर्वज है। इस खोज के निष्कर्ष पत्रिका प्रोसीडिंग्स आफ द रॉयल सोसाइटी बी में प्रकाशित हुआ है। इससे इस बारे में नयी जानकारी मिली है कि वर्तमान समय के लंगूर के पूर्वज कब अफ्रीका से एशिया में आये थे। ये जीवाश्म कपि रमनागरेंसिस प्रजाति के वानर के निचले चव का है, जिसके बारे में पहले जानकारी नहीं थी।
