Meet The New Digital Plague: Travel Shaming
  • 4 years ago
These days, travel in the US is fraught with the logistics and restrictions involved in battling a fluid pandemic.
And there's been a new social woe to accompany all the handwashing and mask-wearing: travel shaming.
According to CNN, users of social media have begun to loudly shame travelers who post pictures of themselves maskless, or not social distancing.
You see upticks in shaming when people are desperate to get everyone to adhere to some norm, and when there's unlikely to be any enforcement of that norm through official channels. Krista Thomason, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Swarthmore University
Not only that, but travelers themselves also report that getting away from life under lockdown isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Sometimes they're shamed on social media during the trip, and sometimes the trip isn't any fun because they're so busy trying not to spread or catch COVID-19.
