Environmental disaster in Argentina: forest fires burned at least 40.000 hectares in Córdoba

The forest fires that were registered in Córdoba, Argentina, devastated, in the last 14 days, more than 40,000 hectares of mountains, pastures, crops, houses, flora, and fauna, while Tuesday morning (September 1) a new outbreak was sighted that began in the vicinity of Cruz del Axis, provincial sources reported.
The Punilla Valley and the Ischillín department was the main sector in which firefighters had to fight the flames in recent weeks, with complications due to adverse climatic factors, and even the total or partial loss of more than 20 homes in the vicinity of Capilla del Monte and Charbonier.
The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of the Argentine province of Córdoba, Sergio Busso, estimated that about 40,000 hectares are affected by the forest fires that have been registered in different regions of the province for two weeks.
"There are about 40,000 hectares that have been devastated by fire," said Busso in statements to Más Radio in the Córdoba town of Jesús María, and explained that "90% of those affected are small producers with less than 100 animals, and they need a very big hand ”.
The official said that the preliminary results of the satellite surveys estimate that of the total hectares reached by the fire, the majority correspond to the Ischilín department and the rest to the Punilla valley.
Due to the damage caused, Busso recalled that yesterday the local government declared an "agricultural disaster" zone to the regions affected by the fires to assist the victims such as agricultural producers, rural families, businesses, and environmental repair. The agricultural producers affected will receive tax deferrals and debt forgiveness and credit lines.
As a palliative, a restoration plan for the burned areas will be implemented with the reforestation of native trees, seeking a systematized recomposition, with the support of the Government of Misiones through its Germplasm Bank Biofactory.
