Can you cure CKD and & repair kidney damage from kidney disease?

Dadvice TV Episode 82: Can you cure CKD and & repair kidney damage from kidney disease? I get asked this question daily. Many people hear of my success in improving my health, they see my labs improving, and they assume there is a cure for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Top that with websites selling tablets with exotic ingredients that promise to completely restore your kidney function – it’s easy to see why people ask me if you can cure kidney disease.

Let’s start with some groundwork
• I am not a doctor. I have NO medical training.
• I am a kidney patient. I was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure and told I had no chance of getting better and I needed dialysis.
• As you can see, I’m a super nerd and I pretty much science the heck out of possible alternatives to dialysis. I NEVER went on dialysis.
• I worked closely with my entire health care team – of which a key player was renal dietitians.
• Today, 1.5 years later, I am Stage 3 and have NO symptoms.
• Are my kidneys less damaged today than when I collapsed outside the ER with kidney failure? NO – they are just as damaged. There is currently no way to repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The damage I have will be with me for the rest of my life.

Now some may be confused – my kidneys are just as damaged today with a GFR of 33 as they were with a GFR of 8 – how is that possible? GFR Does NOT measure kidney damage. It measures how well your kidneys are removing waste products, most commonly creatinine, from your bloodstream.

There is currently NO WAY to cure or repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The scar tissue, the damaged nephrons (the filters), and any other damage cannot be undone, cured, or restored. With current medical science, THERE IS NO CURE.
