After the spike in COVID-19 infections over the weekend, South Korea's health authorities have raised social distancing measures to level 2 and are considering whether to raise them further to level 3.

South Korea continues to see triple-digit numbers of new COVID-19 infections.
To stay alert and prevent further cluster infections, the Korea Centers for Disease control and Prevention has raised the social distancing measures to level 2.
However, due to fast spread of the infection, the health authorities are looking into raising that level further.

"If the situation worsens before the end of this week, we may take virus prevention measures within the second level of social distancing. We are also reviewing whether to raise the level of social distancing to level three."

Under the second level of social distancing measures, indoor gatherings of more than 50 people are not allowed.
Schools must reduce the number of students attending classrooms.
And, spectators are not allowed at sports events.
However, if there are more than 100 daily COVID-19 cases, the government could raise social distancing measures to the highest level.
In that case, gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited.
Most public facilities such as schools and museums will be closed.
And people will be required to work from home.

With the toughened disease prevention guidelines at schools, health authorities have urged schools to reduce class sizes to one-third.
This will affect all public schools in the metropolitan area including Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province, for two weeks starting this Tuesday.
