Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he did not want every single child in Malaysia to grow up to become religious clerics but to pursue other professions that would be necessary to strengthen the economy and to resist foreign influence.

The Prime Minister said this during a Q&A at an international colloquium on "Demystifying Islamophobia: Towards a deeper understanding of Islam" organised by the Institute of Islamic Understanding of Malaysia (Ikim) on Monday.
