It was in 1942 when the world was going through the havoc caused by World War II. India too was facing the heat and after the Cripps Mission had failed, and on 8 August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi made a Do or Die call through the Quit India movement. Large protests and demonstrations were held all over the country. However, as the movement didn’t get too much support from the outside, it was crushed and the British refused to grant immediate Independence, saying that it could happen only after the war had ended.

आज से ठीक 78 साल पहले 'करो या मरो' के नारे के साथ महात्मा गांधी ने ब्रिटिश हुकूमत के खिलाफ अपना तीसरा बड़ा आंदोलन छेड़ने का फैसला लिया। 8 अगस्त 1942 की शाम को बम्बई में कांग्रेस की कार्यसमिति की बैठक में 'अंग्रेजों भारत छोड़ो' आंदोलन का प्रस्ताव पास किया गया। अंग्रेजों को भारत छोड़ने पर मजबूर करने में इस आंदोलन का बहुत बड़ा हाथ था।बापू ने इस आंदोलन की शुरुआत अखिल भारतीय कांग्रेस समिति के मुंबई अधिवेशन से की थी। अंग्रेजों को देश से भगाने के लिए भारतीय राष्‍ट्रीय कांग्रेस ने 4 जुलाई, 1942 को एक प्रस्‍ताव पारित किया था।
