Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is laying the foundation stone for a temple that's been at the centre of a decades-long land dispute. It is also been the cause of Hindu-Muslim violence and tension during the long battle. In 1992, Hindu groups demolished a 16th Century mosque on the site, saying it was originally a temple for one of their most revered kings and deities, Lord Ram. The Supreme Court last year gave the site to Hindus to rebuild the temple and gave Muslims another plot of land to construct a mosque. Many South African Hindus are devotees of Ram and there are several temples dedicated to him in South Africa.
