After widespread Black Lives Matter protests throughout Los Angeles turned violent LA Mayor Eric Garcetti requested the California National Guard. This request was approved by Governor Gavin Newsom on May 30, 2020. The protests quickly turned peaceful, although there had already been widespread looting and vandalism in downtown Los Angeles, the Fairfax District, Beverly Hill & Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica and Long Beach.

Though some people commented to me that was a "jarring" sight to see the National Guard all over Los Angeles, the troops were welcomed by Angelenos with open arms.
