Stunning rainbow clouds form at sunset in the Philippines

Colourful rainbow clouds shine overhead the Sierra Madre mountain range in Quezon province, the Philippines just a few moments before sunset.

Onlooker Maviel Suaverdez said that she was amazed after seeing the unusual clouds hovering over their village on July 5.

She said: "I was relaxing in the balcony when I saw the clouds. I did not expect to see this, I thought it is just a normal sunset but it turned out to be an outstanding one."

The Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the country, covering the northeast coast of the Luzon island.

The cloud iridescence phenomenon, also known as rainbow clouds or fire rainbows, happens when small water droplets or small ice crystals are suspended in the cloud. These then reflect the sunlight.
