Dilshan was born to a Muslim father and a Buddhist mother and was known as Tuwan Mohamed Dilshan. He shed his Muslim name shortly after his international debut in 1999 and took up the name Tillakaratne Mudiyanselage Dilshan with an ethnic Sinhalese-Buddhist identity. While the players were walking back to the dressing room in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, Shehzad was caught on camera telling Dilshan "if you are a non-Muslim and you turn Muslim, no matter whatever you do in your life, straight to heaven." Dilshan's reply was not audible, and Shehzad went on to say, "Then be ready for the fire."

न सिर्फ क्रिकेट में बल्कि खेल में हमलोग ने कई खिलाड़ियों को अपने मन से एक धर्म को छोड़कर दूसरे धर्म को अपनाते हुए देखा है. कई ऐसे उदाहरण हैं. पर कभी ये नहीं देखा कि एक मुस्लिम खिलाड़ी किसी दूसरे धर्म के खिलाड़ी को मैच के दौरान ही धर्म बदलने की सलाह दी हो. ऐसा क्रिकेट में हुआ है और इसके बाद बड़ा हंगामा भी हुआ था. क्योंकि क्रिकेट के मैदान पर कोई भी खिलाड़ी अपने देश के लिए खेलने को जाता है. उसे धर्म से मतलब नहीं होता सिर्फ देश के लिए खेलता है. पर बात साल 2014 की है जब दांबुला के मैदान पर पाकिस्तान और श्रीलंका की टीमें आमने सामने थीं.
