Feuding royals. A deadly planet. Before Star Wars or Game of Thrones, there was Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi novel. Vanity Fairs preview of Denis Villeneuve’s new movie.
In the new film adaptation, directed by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Chalamet stars as the young royal Paul Atreides, the proverbial stranger in a very strange land, who’s fighting to protect this hostile new home even as it threatens to destroy him. Humans are the aliens on Arrakis. The dominant species on that world are immense, voracious sandworms that burrow through the barren drifts like subterranean dragons.
Chalamet isn't the only notable actor starring in the upcoming remake — Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, and Stellan Skarsgard also have roles in the film.
Isaac will play Duke Leto, the noble but doomed head of the Atreides family, while Skarsgard will play his rival, the ruthless Baron Harkonnen. Bardem and Zendaya star as members of the Fremen (Bardem as their leader and Zendaya as a Fremen tribe member and love interest of Paul's, called Chani), and Brolin will play Gurney Halleck, a loyal warrior of the Atreides house who later mentors Paul.
Also in the cast are Charlotte Rampling, Rebecca Ferguson, and "Blade Runner 2049" star Dave Bautista. And "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa is set to play Duncan Idaho, another Atreides foot soldier who helps Paul fight back against the Harkonnens.
The most current release date for the sci-fi epic is in December of this year, but could be changed because of the current health crisis. Are you excited?
