Exploring Darkness and Life Choices

How dark should I go with my writing? Where is the line of acceptability and readability?
Being a discovery writer, this is a hard balance. I need to play and write freely in order to produce the best work.
Unfortunately this could mean that sensibilities are shocked.
By the time the book is complete, I will see it all as one piece of art and trim it accordingly, but in the mean time, as I am writing, I need to just explore concepts and characters.
Who knows where this will end up!
