We, the Pakistanis/South Asians, take our love for cricket with us wherever we go. The Scotistanis in Scotland are no different. Team Scotistani takes you to Motherwell in this episode where the Bellshill Cricket Club members are playing indoor cricket.
The Bellshill Cricket Club participates in summer outdoor cricket as well as tapeball cricket in the winters. The members come from various cities of Scotland and play indoor cricket once a week in Motherwell. It’s not only an opportunity to play their favourite sport, it also allows them to socialise and have a gup shup around food all members bring along on the day.
The innovation of tape ball cricket began in Karachi, Pakistan in the 1960s where proper equipment, pitches and grounds are a luxury. The tape ball format provided a solution to a vexing issue for these cricket enthusiasts and one that works really well in Scotland due to our cold and rainy weather.
Cricket Scotland supports the various South Asian Cricket clubs in Scotland who play indoor league matches and well as outdoor matches in summer months. Cricket Scotland’s research and their consultation with the South Asian community show that there is a high level of demand for this type of social cricket.
Cricket Scotland are convinced that such enthusiasm and demand for tapeball cricket is likely to create a “Tapeball” following in Scotland.
The rules for indoor tape ball cricket are slightly different to the usual game. Each side has 7 players on the field, 8 overs in an innings, wides are a run on the board, anything down the leg side is a run, if it’s caught with one hand off the wall its out and a run between the wickets is 2 runs.
