Kumar Sangakkara recalled the attack on the team bus that took place in Lahore during 2009 Test series against Pakistan. The first Test between the two teams had ended in a draw. Kumar Sangakkara believes the only reason he and his team members surivived the 2009 terrorist attack in Lahore was due to their bus driver's bravery. Twelve gunmen fired on the Sri Lankan while they were seated in the bus with some top players have suffered severe injuries and undergone bleeding at that time. The rubber was eventually called off due to the magnitude of the situation.

3 मार्च 2009, डेट याद रखियेगा. ये क्रिकेट इतिहास का सबसे काला दिन माना गया. क्योंकि इसी दिन पाकिस्तान के लाहौर में गद्दाफी स्टेडियम के बाहर श्रीलंका टीम पर हमला हुआ था. श्रीलंका टीम की बस पर अंधाधुंध गोलियां चलाई गयी. जिसमें 6 पाकिस्तानी पुलिस ऑफिसर और दो नागरिक की मौत हो गयी थी. वहीं, छह श्रीलंकाई खिलाड़ी के साथ एक अंपायर और 2 सपोर्ट स्टाफ बुरी तरह से घायल हो गए थे. श्रीलंका क्रिकेट टीम के पूर्व कप्तान कुमार संगकारा भी उस बस में मौजूद थे और आज भी उस घटना को याद कर दहल जाते हैं. लौहार टेस्ट मैच के तीसरे दिन जब श्रीलंका की टीम मैच खेलने स्टेडियम जा रही थी तभी 12 बंदूकधारियों ने बस पर गोली बरसानी शुरू कर दी.
