Fort Louis-Delgrès, in Basse-Terre, covers approximately 5 hectares. In addition to the remains of this fortress erected between 1650 and 1770, two exhibitions are visible on the site: Louis Delgrès and the Guadeloupe war of 1802 and La Grande poudrière and the events of Soufrière in 1976.
The site now invites you to relax. However, it is a completely different atmosphere that reigned there a few centuries ago. Fort Louis-Delgrès, located in Carmel, in Basse-Terre, was built in successive phases, between 1650 and 1770, to defend the harbor of Basse-Terre against English attacks. He saw English and French compete for the possession of the territory, during the XVIIth and VXIIIth centuries. In 1802, the site was also one of the main theaters of the so-called "Guadeloupe" war, between the army of color, led by Louis Delgrès and Joseph Ignace, and the troops of General Richepance, sent by Bonaparte to restore the slave order.
Named Saint-Charles, in its beginnings - in reference to Governor Charles Houël, who took the initiative to fortify the cliff overlooking the Galion River -, the fort was renamed Louis-Delgrès in 1989 by the General Council. This is a tribute to the hero of the abolition Louis Delgrès.

This heritage site, classified as a historic monument in November 1977, covers approximately 5 hectares. The remains of the prison and the dungeon, the military cemetery for officers, the large barracks and even the powder magazine reveal their secrets to those who are willing to linger there.
