US Navy P-8A Recon Aircraft Intercepted By Russian Su-35 Fighter Jet Over Mediterranean Sea
A U.S. Navy plane experienced an “unsafe” intercept by a Russian fighter plane over international waters on June 4.
A Russian Su-35 fighter jet intercepted a Navy P-8A Poseidon surveillance plane three times.
The first and third interactions were in accordance with international rules, the second was not.
The second interaction was determined to be unsafe due to the SU-35 conducting a high-speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, which put our pilots and crew at risk.
Moscow denied its aircraft had acted irresponsibly, saying it had stayed at a safe distance and had returned to its base after the U.S. aircraft changed course.
The P-8 came to the edge of Syrian airspace off the coast of Tartus
