The Washington Post reports it's called "hemorrhagic disease virus type 2" and is known to have caused rabbit deaths in southern California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and Nevada.

the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says it's not related but does require similar protective and preventative measures.
Those include placing rabbits in quarantines and establishing more stringent sanitation standards.
