Field Marshal Kodandera “Kipper” Madappa Cariappa OBE (28 January 1899 – 15 May 1993) was the First Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and led the Indian forces on the Western Front during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947. He is one of the two Indian Army officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal (the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw). His distinguished military career spanned almost three decades, at the highest point of which, he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Military in 1949.

आज़ादी के साथ ही भारत को पाकिस्तनी हमले का सामना करना पड़ा । इस हमले में जम्मू कश्मीर का बड़ा हिस्सा पाकिस्तान के कब्जे में चला गया, जिसे आज पाकिस्तान अधिकृत कश्मीर के नाम से जाना जाता है। लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि शुरूआती पाकिस्तानी हमले में जम्मू कश्मीर का बहुत बड़ा हिस्सा पाकिस्तान के कब्ज़े में चला गया था। आज जो हिस्सा भारत के पास है उसमें से पुंछ , राजौरी , कारगिल और द्रास जैसे इलाके भी पाकिस्तान के कब्जे में थे। इन सारे हिस्सों को भारतीय सेना ने पाकिस्तान के कब्ज़े से वापस जीता। इसके लिए भारतीय सेना ने आपरेशन किप्पर , ईज़ी और बयसन चलाये । इन सारे आपरेशंस का नेतृत्तव करिअप्पा खुद कर रहे थे। वे आगे बढ़ कर जम्मू कश्मीर के बाकी हिस्सों को भी आज़ाद करवाना चाहते थे लेकिन उन्हें इसके लिए केंद्र से आदेश ही नहीं मिले।
