We start with emergency job creation efforts in South Korea... as local jobseekers face the most torrid period in many years... due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
To help those in dire straits,... South Korea's finance chief has vowed to create more than one-and-a-half million public sector jobs.
Kim Jae-hee reports.
South Korea's finance ministry says the government will create around 1-point-five-six million jobs in the public sector as the coronavirus-triggered unemployment crisis continues to bite.
The announcement came shortly after an emergency economic meeting Thursday,... and one day after the nation reported its steepest job losses for the month of April in more than 20 years.
"Since April 22nd, the government has been rolling out stimulus packages to help the employment situation. As part of those measures, the government will focus on providing one-point-five-six million public sector jobs."
Some 600-thousand out of 945-thousand jobs including jobs for seniors in the public sector have not been active due to the epidemic,... but the government will soon open up such jobs by easing some rules.
The government will also create more than 550-thousand additional jobs,... mainly in non-contact and digital sectors for young people.
The hiring process for some 48-thousand public officials and jobs in public institutions will also resume this month.
The finance minister added that the government will push for a safety net for temporary, part-time and freelance workers.
Officials plan to finalize the specific measures during next week's economic meeting.
The required funds will be drawn from a planned third coronavirus-related supplementary budget.
