On May 8, 1945, President Harry S. Truman announced on radio that Nazi Germany's forces had surrendered. "This is a solemn but glorious hour," said Truman. "General Eisenhower informs me that the forces of Germany have surrendered to the United Nations. May 8 is now known as V-E Day, or Victory in Europe Day.
