This was the moment a group of friends experienced first-hand the glowing effects of bioluminescent algae of the Californian coast on May 3.

Footage shows how filmer, Austin Underwood, waves his arm around the water that gives off a glowing blue hue like something from a Sci-Fi film.

He told Newsflare: "My friends and I went down to Alamitos beach in Long Beach to check out the bioluminescence.

"When we jumped in the water we noticed how intense the chemical reactions were so we filmed a few videos of what we saw."
