The highly infectious Spanish flu had swept through the ashram in Gujarat where 48-year-old Gandhi was living, four years after he had returned from South Africa. He rested, stuck to a liquid diet during "this protracted and first long illness" of his life. When news of his illness spread, a local newspaper wrote: "Gandhi's life does not belong to him - it belongs to India".

1918 में भी एक स्पेनिश फ्लू ने कहर बरपाया था। जिसके चपेट में खुद महात्मा गांधी भी आ गए थे। उस वक्त दक्षिण अफ्रीका से लौटे हुए उन्हें चार साल हुए थे और उनकी उम्र 48 साल थी। फ्लू के दौरान उन्हें पूरी तरह से आराम करने को कहा गया था। वो सिर्फ तरल पदार्थों का सेवन कर रहे थे। वो पहली बार इतने लंबे दिनों के लिए बीमार हुए थे। जब उनकी बीमारी की खबर फैली तो एक स्थानीय अखबार ने लिखा था, 'गांधीजी की जिंदगी सिर्फ उनकी नहीं है बल्कि देश की है। यह फ्लू मुंबई में सैनिकों के जहाज से पूरे देश में फैला था।
