President Moon Jae-in has pledged continued support for South Korea's shipping industry.
The remarks came at a ceremony christening the biggest container vessel in the world... made right here in South Korea.
With its launch,... to be followed by 11 similar ships,... President Moon vowed all-out support for the country's shipping industry so that it can join the world's top five.
Arirang News' senior Blue House correspondent Kim Min-ji reports.
President Moon Jae-in has pledged to spare no effort in helping South Korea's shipping industry emerge as the world's fifth largest.
He was speaking Thursday at a ceremony to christen the 'Algeciras' the world's largest container vessel... to be used by South Korean shipper HMM, formerly Hyundai Merchant Marine.
It can carry some 24-thousand containers and is equivalent in size to four football pitches.
Eleven more container ships of a similar size will be launched by South Korean shipbuilders this year.
Today's christening ceremony is just the beginning. This year, a dozen container ships of this class will be sailing around the world. These 12 ultra-large container vessels will be able to restore the status of our shipping industry.
To that end,... Moon laid out a three-point vision... that calls for the creation of a win-win model under which shippers and traders can co-prosper.
It also seeks to adapt to the fourth industrial revolution by adopting IT features,... while building ships that are eco-friendly.
Moon emphasized the importance of the shipping industry for the country's economy,... vowing that there will not be a repeat of the difficulties suffered in 2017 with the collapse of Hanjin Shipping which used to be a leading shipper.
Noting the difficulties the local industry may face amid the closing of borders and decline in demand,... Moon said the government will be mulling all possible means to help them steer through the crisis.
The government will stand by these firms so they can weather the waves heading towards the shipping industry. We will work with the international community to prevent the collapse of global supply chains.
Shipping is one of the key industries that will benefit from the government's stimulus package worth 32 billion U.S. dollars to ensure that they stay afloat and can keep their workers employed.
The oceans ministry also unveiled a set of separate support measures for the shipping industry worth over 1 billion dollars.
