To starve or get sick: Africa’s lockdown dilemma amid the coronavirus pandemic

While much of the developed world waited weeks before taking action, countries across Africa rapidly shut borders, banned mass gatherings and imposed lockdowns at the first sight of the coronavirus pandemic. But the social distancing measures are having a wrenching impact on millions across the continent who live hand to mouth. Restrictions on movements mean daily wage earners cannot go out to make money for food, forcing them to make a dire choice between starving or risking Covid-19.
