ASEAN+3 leaders agree to set up regional COVID-19 response fund

The leaders of South Korea, China, Japan and ASEAN member nations have agreed to strengthen solidarity and enhance regional cooperation in the fight against COVID-19.
As well as setting up a joint fund for health emergencies,... the leaders also aim to implement a system to reserve essential medical supplies.

The ASEAN+3 leaders have agreed to set up a regional COVID-19 response fund.
In a joint statement following the virtual summit on Tuesday,...
the leaders said they would reallocate existing cooperation funds stressing the need to ensure adequate financing to contain the pandemic and protect people's lives.
They also plan to establish a system to reserve essential medical supplies.
To minimize the socio-economic impact of COVID-19,... the ASEAN+3 will encourage regional interconnectedness by facilitating the essential movement of people, including business travel.
They also reaffirmed commitment to keeping markets open for trade and investment,... as well as to maintain emergency food supplies.
A strengthened early warning system in the region for infectious diseases was also suggested,... and for the timely and transparent exchange of real-time information and measures each country has taken.
The video conference presided by Vietnam, this year's ASEAN chair was similar to the virtual summit held between the leaders of the Group of 20 in late March.
COVID-19 cases among ASEAN nations has topped 21-thousand,... up from less than 1-thousand around a month ago.
"Facing the seriousness of this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we need to promote the valuable tradition of unity and hand-in-hand cooperation to strongly overcome this challenging and critical situation."
During President Moon Jae-in's turn to speak,... he said that South Korea will secure additional funding for humanitarian assistance... and respond to the fullest extent possible to any calls for help from other countries, including the ASEAN nations.
We are discussing ways to utilize the South Korea-ASEAN Cooperation Fund. I hope we can overcome the COVID-19 crisis together by mobilizing all the resources at our disposal, including the assistance made through trust funds at the Asian Development Bank as well as funding raised at the ASEAN+3 level.
President Moon said that South Korea will actively share its first-hand experience and know-how,... adding that he hopes the initiatives agreed upon on Tuesday will lead to tangible outcomes that can put an end to the COVID-19 crisis.
