Basically when a batsman get out on the score of zero, its called a duck. The only reason it’s called that is because the shape of zero resembles that to a duck’s egg. Later on, the word egg was dropped and they started calling the score of zero to be duck. It has an interesting background story: the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII, was dismissed for nought on July 17, 1866. Then a ‘Daily Times’ correspondent recording the incident, wrote that the Prince “retired to the royal pavilion on a ‘duck’s egg’.”
