Indonesian detention centre allows release of 175 detainees due to coronavirus risk

An Indonesian detention centre in Makassar has allowed the release of 175 detainees due to the risk of them becoming infected with COVID-19.

On Monday morning (April 6) as many as seven ex-detainees were released under house arrest.

The head of Makassar Penitentiary Robianto said: "According to the Decree of the Minister of Law and Human Rights, it was said that in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and detention centres, inmates who had already served half of the criminal sentence and two-thirds as of 31 December 2020 can be released under house arrest."
