Macy’s to Furlough Majority of 130,000
Employees Amid Coronavirus Closures On March 30, Macy’s Inc. announced their decision to
furlough a majority of their employees and instead move
to the “absolute minimum workforce needed.” The exact number of employees being furloughed
is not known, but Macy’s currently has around 130,000
part-time and full-time employees. The furlough decision was made in an effort to preserve the company, as Macy’s has lost a majority of its sales due to the COVID-19 forced closure of all its storefront locations. Macy’s Inc.,
via statement According to their statement, there will be “fewer
furloughs” in their digital business, distribution centers
and call centers, as Macy’s will still operate online. Furloughed employees who are enrolled in the
company's health benefits plan will reportedly
continue to be supported until at least May. Macy’s said they expect to bring employees back on a
“staggered basis” once normal operations begin to resume.
