Letisha: If you’re home alone and you’re having a rough time,
00:35
there’s nothing like picking up the phone, having a friend or
00:39
having somebody kind of walk you through it.
00:41
I had a great network of girlfriends and none of them even had
00:45
babies but they just, you know, kind of adopted, and they’re all
00:49
honorary aunts and they would come over and, you know, take my
00:53
daughter so I could just take a nap for 90 minutes or something
00:56
like that and just to recharge your batteries.
00:59
Ekere Ekandem Olojala: We talk to mothers about contacting our
01:01
breastfeeding peer counselors.
01:03
They’re usually within the same age group, within the same
01:05
socioeconomic status, and have the same experience and have also
01:11
had those same challenges.
01:13
That’s the unique part about the WIC program, because we recruit
01:16
within our population.
01:18
Dr. Sahira Long: For those who need the support of their family so,
01:21
you know, teach them what they can do to help you.
01:24
If they want to come over and cook, if they want to come over
01:27
and clean, if they want to come over and do things so that you
01:30
can focus on feeding your baby, that’s how they can come and
01:33
help you.
01:34
They don’t have to have anything to do with the feeding
01:38
experience and they can keep their comments at the door.
01:42
But if their goal is to support you as their family member, just
01:46
give them practical ways that they can support you and let them
01:49
know -- if their comments bother you,
01:52
tell them,
01:54
“This is a decision that I’ve made, and you don’t have to
01:58
agree with the decision.
02:00
You just need to respect it.”
